Undergraduate students

UBC is committed to developing "learner-centered undergraduate curricula that incorporate research, international, interactive and interdisciplinary components."

Our Trek 2000 strategies include the following goals:

  1. All undergraduate students entering UBC by the year 2003 will, in the course of a four-year degree programme, have a research-based learning experience that integrates the many research opportunities at UBC into undergraduate learning. This integration may take many forms, including research seminars, research assistantships, research projects, or research based inquiry and problem solving.

  2. The curriculum will include courses or learning experiences that are international in scope. This component may take many forms, such as second language instruction, history/political science or humanities courses, an international visit or exchange, a community-based international project, or work with an international mentor.

  3. Students will be exposed to learning that is interactive in process, facilitating two-way dialogue and "hands on" experiences. Personal interactions between student and professor and between student and student will be enhanced by new teaching methodologies, research experiences, co-op and work placements, and mentoring programs.

  4. Programs will offer a learning experience that is interdisciplinary or interprofessional in content, showing students the relations among different branches of knowledge. Students might obtain such a perspective by taking courses (or minors) outside their home faculty, enrolling in interdisciplinary courses, or engaging in interdisciplinary or interprofessional research.
